DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS

INTRODUCTION:

Golaghat Commerce College, a pioneering institution of higher education of Assam, primarily, of commerce education, was established in 1972. Initially, the college was exclusively a college of commerce education, but in 1989-90, Arts stream was also introduced at Higher secondary level on public demand. Economics, (as it was a compulsory subject at undergraduate level of commerce at that time) was also introduced in the college in 1974. Honours in Economics atundergraduate levelinArts stream was introduced from the session 1993-94.

THE TEACHING FACULTIES:

Ms. Punya Prava Rajkhowa and Ms. Abha Devi were initially appointed as lecturer in Economics. LateBhubanSaikiaand Ms. PurabiChetiaworked as lecturer for a few months in 1975-76. Later, Late  PranabTamuly started teaching Economics and Mr.Mahendra Nath Saikia and Late Md.  Sahabuddin Ahmed Joined as leturers in Economics from 1975 and 1976 respectively. In the year 1976, Mr. Prassanna Kumar Borthakur was appointed as lecturer in Economics.Over the period, Ms. Julfiquera Begum, Ms. Moonmoni Baruah, Mr. Arindam Bora, Ms. MeghaliSaikia and Ms.Julee Dutta were appointed as Assistant Professors and Dr. Priyanka Bharali joined the department as Assistant Professor in February, 2021.

THE HEADs OF THE DEPARTMENT (HODs):

In 1986-87, Mr. Mahendra Nath Saikia was appointed as Head of the Department of Economics and latter Md. SahabuddinAhmed took charge as HOD. On the retirement of Md. S. Ahmed on 31st Oct.,2011, Mr. P.K.Borthakurtook the charge and remained in the position till April,2016. Ms.Moonmoni Baruah became the Head of the Department on 1st May 2016 and is continuing in the position till date. Mr. P.K.Borthakur became the Vice Principal of the college in September, 2015 and retired on 31st March, 2017.

ACADEMICAND CO – CURRICULARACTIVITIES OF THE DEPARTMENT:

The faculty members of the department participate in different Faculty Development Programmes, Orientation Programmes and Refresher Courses to be updated with current academic scenario and publish research papers and articles as an academic exercise.

With collective effort of the faculties, the Department formed the ECONOMIC FORUM (a unit of the teachers and students of the Department) on 30th June, 2010. Since its formation, the Economic Forum had undertaken different academic and co-curricular activities. A brief description of those activities(from Jan,2016 till date) is as under :

  1. SPEECH on “VALUEEDUCATIONAND ITS RELEVANCE IN DEVELOPING THE SOCIETY” on 05/09/2016:

The Department organized a speech on the topic “Value education and its relevance in developing the society” on 05/09/2016. Mr. Dwipen Dutta, prominent journalist and the then President of Golaghat District Journalists’ Association joined as the speaker of the topic. Mr. Dutta, in his speech, highlighted different aspects of value education and its impact on the society in the presence of the teachers and the students of the Department.

 

 

  1. AWARDINGSTUDENTSON 17/08/2016:

The Department has awarded one of the students from B.Com. 3rdSemester SriHemantaSaikia for securing good Marks in the subject Business Economics in B.Com.2nd Semester Final Examination, 2016.

  1. DEPARTMENTAL SEMINAR on 10/09/2016:

Department of Economics, Golaghat Commerce College organized a Seminar on the Topic “State Budget of Assam, 2016-17, an Analysis” on 10th September, 2016 in the presence of Principal, Vice Principal, all the teachers and about 100 students of the College. The seminar was chaired by Dr.Jatindra Nath Saikia, the Principal of the College, and the Key-note address was put forwarded by Mr. P.K.Borthakur, the Vice Principal of the College. Ms. Moonmoni Baruah, the HOD, Economics presented a paper on the subject and analyzed all the aspects of the budget. From the teachers, Mr. A .K .Das,  Mr. Rajesh Jaiswal and invited guest journalist Mr. Dwipen Dutta shared their views on different aspects of the budget.  The seminar was hosted by Ms. Julfiquera Begum, Assistant Professor of the Department and ended with the vote of thanks by Ms.Julee Dutta, Assistant Professor of the Department.

 

  1. SYMPOSIUM on 25/11/2016:

The Department organized a symposium on the topic “Demonetization policy of the Government of India” on 25/11/2016 in the Rana Tamuly memorial auditorium of the College. The discussion was chaired by Mr. Prassanna Kumar Borthakur, the then Vice Principal of the college. The discussion became successful with active participation of around fifty teachers and students of the college. Around eight teachers put forwarded their views on the said topic and the participants remained optimistic about the positive result of the policy.

  1. WALL MAGAZINE:

For uplifting the creative skills of the students, the Departmentpublishes a Wall Magazine namely SHROTOSWINI everyyear. The Wall magazine has been awarded many times in the inter-departmental competition and was awarded the best wall magazine in the year 2017-18.

 

  1. FIELD STUDY on 30/01/2017:

 

On 23rd March, 2019, the teachers and the students of the Department of Economics visited the Bonkual Gaon situated in Kamargaon,Golaghat, Assam. 30 students (both from Honours and Non- Honours Course) and all the teachers (five) from the Department visited the village to conduct a socio- economic survey of the villagers. The survey found that all the inhabitants of the village are from the Missing Community and reside in changghar’s.  The main occupation of most of the villagers is agriculture and allied activities. They cultivate mostly rice and pulses, mustard seeds and vegetables like pumpkins, bottle guards. In addition to cultivation, most of the households had animal husbandry and handlooms. The economic condition of most of the people in the village is not satisfactory and about 70% of the people live below poverty line.

 

 

 

 

  1. TALK PROGRAMME on 14/09/2017:

 

On 14 September, 2017 the Department of Economics, GCC organised a talk on “Economic Reforms of Modi Government”, delivered by Ms. Julee Dutta, Assistant Professor of the Department of Economics. The talk intended to discuss the various reforms and policies introduced by the government of India during that period. The students and teachers of the department discussed and analysed the impacts of those policies on the economy in short run and long run. Late Principal Dr.Rajib Lochan was remembered and condolence was offered.

 

 

  1. TALK PROGRAMME on 24/02/2018:

The Department of Economics, Golaghat Commerce College organized a Talk Programme on 24th February,2018 on the Topic “Union Budget, 2018-19”. Ms. Moonmoni Baruah, the Head of the Department delivered the talk in the presence of the teachers and students of the Department. The Union Budget is the foundation of economic development, it helps to deal with economic and social problems. In the talk the highlights of Union Budget were presented in details along with the impact it will have on the economy. The talk and the afterward discussion on the topic were very fruitful for the students and everyone present there.

 

  1. TALK PROGRAMMEon 05/10/2018:

Department of Economics, Golaghat Commerce College organized a Talk Programme on the Topic “Economic instability in Capitalism with special reference to Globalisation” on 5th October, 2018. Dr.Jadumoni Das, Associate Professor in the Department of Economics, Debraj Roy College, Golaghatdelivered the talk on the topic in the presence of Mr. Anup Kumar Das, the then Principal of the College, faculty members and the students of the Department of Economics. The speaker, in his speech, highlighted the causes of the economic instabilities took place in the most capitalist economics caused by Globalization. An interesting interactive session among the students and the resource person was followed by the speech.

 

  1. SEMINAR on 11/10/2018

On 11th October,2018 a seminar was organised by the Department of Economics for their major students; delivered by Ms. MeghaliSaikia. the talk started with how to prepare slides and full paper for the seminars. In lieu with the topic few economic topics were discussed. All the faculty members of the department discussed about diverse topics related to economics. The students were encouraged to clarify their doubts and encourage them for participating in future seminars.

 

  1. FIELD STUDY on 23/05/2019:

On 23rd March, 2019, the teachers and the students of the Department of Economics visited the BalijanShyam Gaon situated in Titabar in Jorhat district of Assam. 36 students (both from Honours and Non- Honours Course) and all the teachers (five) from the Department visited the Village with a view to conduct a socio- economic survey of the Villagers. The survey found that all the inhabitants of the village are from the Shyam Community and Buddhism. The main occupation of most of the villagers is agriculture and allied activities. They cultivate mostly rice and pulses and some of them have tea gardens. Some of the households have rubber plantations also. In addition to cultivation, most of the households had animal husbandry and handlooms. One significant sign in their society is that no household used locks and keys to close their houses because there is no fear of theft among them. The people from the village live peacefully and their socio-economic conditions are average.

  1. SYMPOSIUM on 05/09/2019:

On the occasion of Teacher’s Day, the Department of Economics, GCC organised a symposium on the topic “Indian Economy, Neo-Liberazition and Unemployment problem” to discuss about Indian Economy in the context of Neo Liberalization and Unemployment Problem. The lead speaker of the talk Mr. Arindam Bora, Assistant Professor of the Department highlighted the present scenario of Indian Economy with special reference to Assam. The students were enlightened how the neo liberalization policies and unemployment problems are interrelated.

 

  1. STUDY TOURon 08.02/2020 :

On 8th February, 2020 a group of students along with two teachers from the Department of Economics,Golaghat Commerce College visited Mayodiya, a beautiful hill station and tourist spot in Arunachal Pradesh situated in the east of Assam. The students studied about the economic potentialities of the place as it is one of the mostly visited places of Arunachal Pradesh. The study found that about two hundred people daily in average visit the place for tourism purpose. The study also reveals the fact that facilities such as drinking water, food, and wash room are not sufficient in the place and there is enough scope for developing it.

 

  1. WEBINAR on 24/08/2020 :

Due to the occurrence of COVID 19 pandemic all over the world, all the educational institutions remained closedfor a long time and therefore, as an academic exercise, the Department organised a National Level Webinar on the Topic “Pandemic Covid 19: The Macroeconomic Crisis and Revival” on 24/08/2020 in collaboration with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell(IQAC), Golaghat Commerce College. Dr. Debashish Bose, Associate Professor in the Department of Economics, DDR College, Chabua,renowned economist was the resource person in the webinar and delivered a speech on the topic. About 100 participants from across the country participated the webinar.  Mr. Paresh Saikia, the then Principal of the College delivered the welcome speech and Dr. Jiban Jyoti Kakaty, the then Co-ordinator, IQAC, of the College stated the Key-note address in the webinar. The Programme was hosted by Ms. Moonmoni Baruah, HOD, Economics and ended with the vote of thanks by Ms. MeghaliSaikia, Assistant Professor in Economics.

 

  1. TEACHER – STUDENT INTERACTIONon 11/11/2021:

On 11th November, 2021 a Teachers- Students Interactive Session namely “Antorik” was organized by the Department of Economics, Golaghat Commerce College in Rana TamuliMemorial Auditorium. The session was inaugurated by Ms. Moonmoni Baruah, HOD, Economics. In her speech, Ms. Baruah stated in details about the evaluation system in CBCS in Undergraduate Level. The theme of the session was to interact with the students to bridge the communication gap among the teachers and the students. Along with it the B.A. 1st Semester Honours students were given a warm welcome to the Department of Economics and the immediate passed out students were given a farewell. The session was fruit full as the new comers were given an idea about the evaluation system of CBCS undergraduate course and their duties and the passed-out students a guidance on career was forwarded.

The students present had performed activities like – poem recitation, songs, speech, etc. which highlighted their talents. From the teachers, Ms. Julfiquera Begum and Ms. MeghaliSaikia presented melodious songs and beautifully ended the programme.

  1. PARENTS’ MEET on 11/12/2021:

 

On 11th December, 2021 a Parents/Guardians, Teachers and Students Meet was organized by the Department of Economics, Golaghat Commerce College in the Conference Room of the RUSA Building of the College. The Session was moderated by Ms. MeghaliSaikia, Assistant Professor of the Department. She opened the session with beautiful lines of Sanskrit and giving an idea about the three-dimensional link between Teachers-Students-Parents.  An introductory session was held among the Parents/Guardians, Teachers and the students in the programme. Mrs. Moonmoni Baruah, the Head of the Department gave the inaugural speech of the session and also gave a glimpse on the history of the Department, present faculty status, Departmental library, performance of the students and mentoring of the students and welcomed the guests to the Programme. Dr. UtpalSarma, the Principal of the college, Dr. Pradeep Borthakur, Vice Principal and Dr. PranjalPratim Dutta, Co Ordinator, IQAC addressed the audience with their valuable speech and suggestions for uplifting the students. Principal Dr. UtpalSarma, in his speech, enlightened the students about present job market and informed about the extra skill enhancing courses that are undertaken by the college. IQAC coordinator Dr. PranjalPratim Dutta advised the students to work hard during their student life as it will make their future smooth.  Teachers from the Department Ms. Julfiquera Begum and Mr. Arindam Bora addressed the audience with their valuable suggestions for uplifting the students.  Next to the teachers’ speech, two from the parents/guardians spoke about their new experience of attending such event and interaction with the teachers. They appreciated the initiative and urged the students to avail the vast opportunity that the Department and college is offering.

The most important event of the session was about the teacher interacting with all the parents on one – one basis. The one – one interaction with parents and students by the teachers’ highlighted new aspects of the students which will help to boost the future of the students.

  1. REPORT ON: GENERAL MEETING, ECONOMIC FORUM on14/02/2022

The general meeting of economic forum was organized on 14/02/2022 in Conference Hall from 12.30 pm onwards. The meeting was conducted in the presence of all the faculty members and the students of Department Economics.The meeting was chaired by Ms. Moonmoni Baruah (HOD, Economics) and the objective of meeting and secretarial report of his tenure was forwarded by Mr. Arindom Bora, Secretary of Economic Forum. The report was discussed in detailed and after few suggestions the report was accepted. After dissolution of the old committee, a new committee was formed. The members list of the committee:

We publish a departmental Wall Magazine named SHROTOSWINI. We also publish a bulletin ECONOMICA.

LEARNING RESOURCES OF THE DEPARTMENT:

  1. Departmental Library: Apart from the general library of the college, the Department has its own library with selected Reference books, Text books and Journals and other books.
  2. Computer: The Department has the computer facilities for the teachers and the students.
  3. Other Equipment’s: The Department of Economics, Golaghat Commerce College has some other equipment’slike Laptops (teachers’ individual), White board etc. which are used as teaching learning materials.

 

MODERN TEACHING METHODS APPLIED:

Apart from the teaching of specified courses of the students, the faculty members of the Department undertake various measuressuch as :

  1. Project Reports/ Home Assignments/Sessional Examinations etc.

 

TEACHERS’ PARTICIPATIONIN MENTORING THE STUDENTS:

For healthy academic and mental growth of the students the department had introduced the system of MENTORING. All the faculty members of the Department are very much responsive and prompt to the academic needs and problems of the students. Counselling is provided to the students whenever and wherever the need arises. The system functions in the form of groups of students and teachers and each group are guided by one teacher. The students can contact to their respective mentors for guidance in all their academic as well as non- academic matters.
