DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH

About the Department of English:

The history of the department of English, Golaghat Commerce College, dates back to the establishment of the college in 1972. It is one of the ten departments with which the college was started. The department had a humble beginning as in Commerce stream, the importance of the department was not noteworthy enough. But with the opening up of the Arts stream in 1989, the department acquired a new dimension. So far, we had been busy with a curriculum based on only rudimentary skills of communication in English and other commercial correspondence skills. But when the literary aspects came about in the purview of our curriculum, major courses were started from the year 2004.

Vision:

The vision of the department is to foster an inquisitive and critical bent of mind in students through a teaching of literature and literary theories along with offering adequate communication skills to prepare them for their professional needs in a dynamic  global scenario.

Mission:

The department has taken upon itself the mission of working resourcefully to impart different skills to the students along with their regular curriculum.

The department also encourages students, through different programmes, to progress expeditiously to their degrees and to gain the maximum benefit from their experience.

The overall mission of the department is to engage the students in creative writing, research and also public service that advances their understanding of the subject and our surrounding.
