Department of History

The Golaghat Commerce College is a premier and leading educational institution for higher studies in Golaghat district, and it was established in the year 1972. In its inception there was only Commerce stream and the college was affiliated to Dibrugarh University. Later on, to fulfil the dream of the people of Golaghat district, the Arts Stream was introduced in the year 1989 and thereby department of History came into its existence. The department, which was started with pass course only, is now a full fledged one with major course introduced in 1995. The department can also boast of having as its faculty members which includes, namely Mrs. Jyotirupa Bora (HOD), Archana Nath, Mr. Pronab Pathori and Paras Pratim Saikia. Many teachers were serving in the department since its inception. Most of these teachers joined in other institutions and workplaces. They contributed a lot to the department. All the teachers of the department always keep themselves ready for interaction with the students. Teachers of the department are actively engaged in research work in different fields of history and published few papers. The department has planned to introduce an archaeological centre in the department. A lot of initiatives has been taken up and implemented of all facilities. Moreover, we have excellent hardworking and dedicated faculties and they are inspiring our students for better performances in the examination and in all extra-curricular activities.

Aims and Vision of the Department:

• The Department always give attention on equity and quality base education.
• Our department also attempt to improve the leadership quality among the students.
• The department always focus to create an educational environment in the college campus through proper knowledge.
• Keep attention on brilliant results and try to establish strong mentality among the students through which they could solve their own problems in future.
• The department also attempt on physical fitness of the students.

Future Plan of the Department:

• The department has set up a Museum by 2022 and it will be transmitted to an archaeological centre to enhance the historical knowledge of the students of the district.
• The department is planning to organise at least one National Seminar in each year to create consciousness on researchable writings among the students community of the college.
• The department of History is planning to organise an excursion in every year to visit the Historical places of the state and the country and by these programmes the department has been trying to bring consciousness on historical heritage.
• The Department of History is planning to organise different awareness programme on ethnic tourism to improve the economic standard of living of the local people.
• The department of history is planning to set up a departmental library where syllabus oriented textbooks, newspapers, journals and magazines will be available.
